After 12 years as a full-time wedding and elopement photographer I can confidently say that one of the most common things I hear about elopements is that couples love how much easier it is to make it their own. Casting off expectations, outdated traditions and massive catering bills means you have way more freedom to spend that time (and money) doing whatever it is that will make your day special to you. Something like… taking a float plane to elope on a glacier… you know, if that’s your thing.
Luckily for me that’s exactly what Mackenzie and Calder chose to do for their elopement at Tyax Lodge near Gold Bridge, BC. If you haven’t been to this remote lodge way up in the mountains I’d highly recommend packing up your 4×4 capable vehicle and making your way along the rocky roads towards this gorgeous venue. It sits beside a pristine lake with mountain views and right down the road you can find Tyax Adventures where you can book epic flighseeing or adventure air tours.
Mackenzie and Calder started the day getting ready in the cabin just behind the main lodge while their families got the ceremony site ready on the main lawn. After the ceremony and a few quick hugs Mackenzie surprised everybody with an outfit change into an amazing black dress and we hoped into a float plane to fly wayyyy above the clouds onto a glacier (well, beside a glacier) for some absolutely stunning portraits. And since Tyax Adventures hadn’t been operating for months due to Covid the pilot gave us as much time on top of the mountain as we wanted, just so we could all enjoy the fresh air (and let me tell you, it was FRESH).
We finished the day with a tour of the surrounding glaciers and a couple of undocumented bear sightings, and everybody went back to the cabin for dinner.
If you’re weighing your options and trying to decide between eloping your way or waiting it out until a big party can happen just know that you’re the only one that knows what will work best for you. But if you do need somebody to sway you towards eloping just let me know. I’ll happily be on your side (especially when float planes and florals by De La Flore are involved).
